LEDs serve broadband communications - LED Luminaries

Edinburgh start-up Visible Light Communications (VLC) is focussing on using flickering LEDs instead of WiFi for broadband communications, writes David Manners.

?

Speeds of up to 500Mbits/sec have been achieved for the technology, called Li-Fi, but the first product from VLC - a consumer transmitter - will deliver data at 100Mbits/sec using VLC's SIM-OFDM technology and optical spatial modulation.. It is due for launch next year.

The technology was invented by Edinburgh University's Harald Haas. "At the heart of this technology is a new generation of high-brightness light-emitting diodes," says Haas, "very simply, if the LED is on, you transmit a digital 1, if it's off you transmit a

High speeds are achieved by implementing parallel data transmission using arrays of LEDs, where each LED transmits a different data stream.

?

Also mixtures of red, green and blue LEDs can be used to alter the light's frequency, with each frequency encoding a different data channel.

?

Because it uses light rather than radio-frequency signals, VLC could be used in aircraft, integrated into medical devices and hospitals where Wi-Fi is banned, or even underwater, where Wi-Fi doesn't work.

?

The snag with LiFi is, of course, that it relies on line of sight.

?

VLC's SIM-OFDM technology and optical spatial modulation allows LED light to modulate at a rate so fast as to be imperceptible to the human eye, but which can be picked up by receivers such as suitably configured smart-phone cameras at speeds of hundreds of megabits per second, enabling the light source to transmit data.

?

"At the rate we currently adopt wireless data, we will ultimately run out of radio spectrum as we cope with the long term demand of wireless data transmissions and the trillions of bytes of data communicated every month," says VLC CEO Dr Gordon Povey, "turning a light source - a simple household LED bulb for example - into a localised data communications centre is a potentially viable alternative. Where we have an LED light source configured with VLC's own IP, we have a powerful method of carrying data, not just in a single data stream, but thousands of data streams in parallel at high speed."

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Santorum Looks for Momentum

After winning three of ten Super Tuesday states, but narrowly losing to Mitt Romney in Ohio, Rick Santorum will try to generate some new momentum on Saturday in Kansas with GOP Presidential caucuses in that state.

40 delegates are at stake in the Sunflower State - 12 delegates are handed out 'winner take all' in the four congressional districts in Kansas; three to the winner in each district.

28 delegates are divided up proportionally based on the statewide results; 20% of the vote is the threshold to qualify for that batch of delegates.

Santorum has done well in states near Kansas - he easily won Oklahoma last Tuesday and he had a big non-binding win in next door Missouri - and the state's brand of conservative Republican politics should play well for Santorum.

Ron Paul has been the only other candidate to visit Kansas in recent days, as both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich skipped the state; Romney never made any plans to go while Gingrich set up and then cancelled two days of events.

Gingrich will be working Alabama and Mississippi for the next few days until the Tuesday primaries in those southern states; Romney is taking some down time this weekend.

As for Gingrich, earlier in the week his aides indicated Alabama and Mississippi were a last stand in this race; win and he stays in, lose and he goes home.

But now that's changed.

"I think there's a fair chance we'll win," Gingrich told the Associated Press, adding, "I just want to set this to rest once and for all. We're going to Tampa."

New polls in Alabama and Mississippi didn't offer much conclusive evidence on where the races are going.

In Alabama, a Rasmussen poll showed a dead heat, with Gingrich at 30%, Santorum behind by one point and Romney just one back of Santorum in third.

There were differing polls in Mississippi: one showed Gingrich ahead of Romney by 4 points, another had Romney up on Santorum and Gingrich by 8 points.

There has been no polling in Kansas since last November when several polls showed Romney with the advantage over the GOP field.

If he wins the Sunflower State without showing up, that might be a telltale sign about the GOP race.
