Political parties outline sports policies on Joy Sportlink

Saturday?s Joy Sports Link on Joy 99.7 FM tasked political parties to outline their policies for the sports sector considering that Presidential debates over the years have been silent on sports development.

The two-hour show had contributions from key members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Progressive People?s Party (PPP), Convention People?s Party (CPP) and People?s National Convention (PNC). The NDC?s representative, failed to turn up for the show.

NPP to pass sports bill into law

The New Patriotic Party?s Osei-Bonsu Amoah, who was a former Deputy Minister for Education Science and Sports identified sports as a major ingredient in improving the country?s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to him, his party will focus on the passing of a governing law for sports which will include the establishment of a sports fund to provide funding for sports projects.

?We see the development of sports beginning from the schools and we want to equip our educational institutions to ensure the proper discovery and grooming of talents,? he said.

He also revealed that a major priority should the NPP win Election 2012, will be to complete the University of Ghana?s Sports Stadium which was started during the tenure of Ex-President Kufuor.

According to Richmond Keelson, the Progressive People?s Party will pursue the development of sports through the educational system to ensure the elimination of age-cheating in sports.

He said the PPP?s policy on sports is within its ten point development agenda in its manifesto though not explicitly stated.

?We will concentrate on our strengths as a sporting nation and these are football, boxing and athletics and channel resources there,? he said.

Mr Keelson also indicated that a PPP government will devote money to build football stadia in all 10 regions in the country according to the population size.

CPP to factor sports infrastructure in town and country planning

The Convention People?s Party has identified sports as a part of national integration and will tackle it from building infrastructure within communities.

?Our town and country planning system will ensure the proper allocation of land for sports fields and other facilities within residential areas and communities. Many parks meant for sports activities have been built on. And many people hardly have space to even exercise,? Kosi Dede of the CPP told the Joy Sports Link.

He projects the possibility of having swimming pools in communities beginning from the coastal areas which will use sea water to operate the pools.

?We do not only want to focus on the commercial and competitive aspect of sports but also benefits of well-being which can be derived from the masses who will participate in it for health purposes. Many in this country are suffering from obesity because all the space available for exercising and sporting activity has been used to construct buildings,? he said.

PNC to include sports in amended constitution

The People?s National Convention admits no provisions have been made in its 2012 manifesto though its flag bearer, Hassan Ayariga places a lot of importance on sports development.

According to his aide Akani Adam who contributed to the programme via telephone, the party will include their sports development policy in an amended manifesto which will be released next week.
