New Mexico pump prices take a dip

The statewide average for a gallon of gas has dropped 4 cents to $3.01.

The statewide average for a gallon of gas has dropped 4 cents to $3.01. The national average is $3.31.

According to the AAA New Mexico Weekend Gas Watch, among the major metropolitan areas surveyed, motorists in Las Cruces are paying the most at $3.02 and drivers in Albuquerque are paying the least at $2.89.

AAA New Mexico is forecasting that gas prices in 2013 will be less expensive than 2012 as a result of increased domestic oil production and lower demand. AAA said pump prices would likely rise steadily through April or early May, but at a slower pace than last year.

Factoring out significant storms, major wars, or production and distribution outages, AAA expects the largest factor influencing retail gas prices this year will be the strength of the U.S. economy. Stronger-than-expected growth in the economy would result in higher oil and gas prices in anticipation of higher consumption, while a weaker economy would drive prices down.

Average gas prices:

? National $3.31

? New Mexico $3.01

? Albuquerque $2.89

? Las Cruces $3.02

? Santa Fe $2.94

? Texas $3.18

? Colorado $2.89

? Nevada $3.15

? Arizona $3.05
